Out of office: Charlie Austen
‘Out of office’ is a new feature in which we will take a look at some of the amazing things our incredibly talented team get up to when they’re not at work. In the first of the series, we shine a spotlight on Charlie Austen, our Management Accountant and musician extraordinaire.
Charlie is a singer-songwriter playing dynamic acoustic music on the folk/soul/rock spectrum. She’s toured the UK and Europe as an opening act with her own music, as a singer for cult blues-rock band Nine Below Zero and as bass player for indie band Lux Lisbon.
High profile gigs include Bryan Ferry's European tour, several UK tours with Squeeze-frontman and Ivor-Novello award winning songwriter Glenn Tilbrook, being selected for Cat Stevens’s online 'Catsong' festival over lockdown and playing at the Albert Hall with Nine Below Zero.
During lockdown Charlie started work on becoming a one-woman-band, by building her own suitcase drum setup and utilising guitar pedals and other clever inventions to expand her sound!
Charlie’s influences range from classic ‘70s era songwriters like Carole King and Paul Simon, through to Jeff Buckley, ‘90s era Radiohead, The Blacks Keys and the Alabama Shakes.
You can catch Charlie on the upcoming BBC Radio 4 ‘Loose Ends’ programme on Saturday 14th May at 6:15pm, when she will be speaking to Anneka Rice and Sara Cox about upcoming things as well as playing some of her music. You can also check out her social media handles below:
