Combining the variety of building types and uses required careful thought so each element complements and works with the other. A new activities hall is designed as a simple brick pavilion which responds to its context without imitation through its massing, materiality and detail. A contemporary glazed link creates a covered connection between the two of the 19th century buildings.
The range of facilities provided includes new offices for hospital administration staff, workshops and welfare facilities for maintenance staff and hobby rooms for the pensioners. The new hall accommodates a wide range of pensioner activities which includes band practice, dances, and film nights.
