Originally designed as a school in 1804 with vast classrooms, the headquarters building was later subdivided into small office spaces and mess rooms. The scheme restores the room proportions to create gallery spaces and many original features are retained and restored. A sympathetic glass extension provides a new circulation core and an additional gallery space. This transparent link connects new and old giving visitors glimpses into the main galleries.

The listed building now provides 15 contemporary spaces including galleries, book shop, café/bar and educational facilities. The new extension to the rear provides 6 gallery spaces and visitor facilities.
