Saddlers’ Hall

An upgrade for one of the City's oldest livery companies

Steeped in London’s equestrian trading and craft history, Saddlers’ Hall is the home of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers, one of the City’s oldest livery companies. Having adapted to many changes over the centuries, the company today still supports the trade and is also a charitable foundation. The impressive headquarters houses an array of event, working and living spaces. The building is therefore multi-functional and was in need of a series of well thought out, small interventions and adaptations to greatly improve functionality, safety and viability.

Client: The Worshipful Company of Saddlers
Location: London
Status: Complete

Although the original building dated back to the 14th century, destruction in the Great Fire and the Blitz meant it has been rebuilt several times. Standing just a few yards from St Paul’s Cathedral on a quiet street is the most recent version of the historic Hall which the client felt could provide increased income and improved facilities.

The project entailed upgrading some public spaces as well as an upgrade and reconfiguration to the areas for working and living accommodation. With careful thought, application and coordination, changes occurred in a number of areas to increase lettable office space and to provide a range of bedrooms for members, guests and key staff.

For private and relaxing outdoor space, an upgraded third floor roof terrace can be more easily accessed and enjoyed. Kitchen areas function better to service the event spaces. Living areas are much more comfortable and office space is now open plan, better connected and organised with bespoke joinery.

Traditionally elegant, the interventions have made a real difference to how the company can operate and brought improvements for both staff and visitors. The team worked closely throughout to ensure a coordinated design and delivery of the project.
