The Star and Garter
Respectful transformation of a landmark building into prime apartments
Conversion of the Grade II listed former Royal Star and Garter charity home in Richmond Hill into 86 high quality residential apartments. It was not viable for the charity, which provides housing for veterans, to economically upgrade the building to meet its future requirements. The landmark building was therefore sold and sensitively transformed and restored with a contemporary approach that respects its history and context.

The exterior of the building is restored to its original glory, with valuable internal features both preserved and enhanced. Key communal spaces such as the entrance hall, the Chapel and the King’s and Queen’s rooms have been left intact for their original communal purpose and their fine finishes carefully restored.
More modern, detracting additions such as the conservatories, lightwell infills and externally mounted services were removed. Existing office accommodation on the mezzanine level and the colonnades around the communal gardens have been sensitively converted into apartments.
