York Terrace East

Heritage and Conservation

Comprehensive refurbishment of the historically significant, 1-18 York Terrace East. This Grade I listed terrace was originally designed by John Nash to define the southern boundary and central entrance to Regent’s Park. The proposal reinstates the buildings original residential use with a mix of 28 houses and apartments.

The terrace was constructed between 1821 and 1826 and remained in residential use until the second world war when it suffered bomb damage. It subsequently underwent various conversions and was used as offices and latterly by International Students House (ISH) as student accommodation. Over time, much of the internal historical fabric has been removed with the removal of party walls and staircases.

The new houses and apartments are designed to respect the historic residential form in relation to room proportions and hierarchies of the internal spaces and façades. Original entrances are retained along with the shared garden facing the park and staircases and internal decorations preserved. An additional basement storey extends partly under the shared gardens on the park side to provide leisure and other residential amenity facilities.
