It’s design development week for the young aspiring architects and designers taking part in East London’s People’s Pavilion project!

We have joined forces with Beyond the Box Consultants and Urban Symbiotics to support the young East Londoners taking part in the project.

Holly Harrington, Will Harlow, Farah El-Hakim and Clara Chicet, helped 3 of the young designers to take their concept ideas to the next stage by testing and developing their designs through model making.

It was such a treat to collaborate with such bright, enthusiastic and motivated students as part of the People's Pavilion workshop. We hosted a team of three students this week, who had a strong vision for their pavilion, aiming to create an interactive urban oasis. We are very much looking forward to the next round of presentations and seeing even more models!

Holly Harrington, Architect

The People’s Pavilion is a competition that seeks to flip the script on who gets a say in the design and curation of public space. It invites young people from across East London to work in partnership with professionals from the design, construction and creative arts industries, to design and build their own Pavilion on the Here East Campus in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, opening in August.

The young design teams have already accessed online skills workshops in architecture, engineering, sustainability and communications training. Now the shortlisted teams have been invited to develop their designs further, working with professionals in the built environment. We can’t wait to see the final design ideas at the end of the week!

The People's Pavilion is such a great initiative, giving young people a voice in public space. Co-designing with the team was fun and insightful, a day filled with creative, thoughtful ideas. The model-making process helped us understand how the pavilion might be constructed, and I was really impressed by the attention to detail the team demonstrated! Awesome work!

Clara Chicet, Part I Architectural Assistant

All the models and designs created by the young people will be exhibited at the Yard at Here East on June 14th – June 30th, part of a curated exhibition by PoOr Collective for the London Festival of Architecture, with this year’s theme being care. It will be the public who will be invited to choose the winning design.

These aspiring designers have also taken part in a 10-week online masterclass series hosted by Beyond The Box and featuring a raft of cultural institutions from across the Capital, including the V&A Museum, Museum of London, BBC Proms, the RIBA and many more. Ten aspiring cultural producers have since been employed through a grant from the Foundation For Future London to work with Beyond The Box to curate a 10-day festival that will take place at the People’s Pavilion on 21st - 31st  August.

The Collective behind the People’s Pavilion will be producing a guide at the end of the project, to provide the design and construction sector with the first tried and tested framework for engaging in meaningful co-design with young people. The guide will provide a set of practical tools explaining how to reach out and engage with the youth community in meaningful placemaking and cultural programming.
